Met Gala 2021 (Part 1) (2025)

[upbeat music]

[Keke] Hello there.

Welcome, I'm Keke Palmer.

[Ilana] And I'm Ilana Glazer.

And we are your cohosts

and partners in crime

for tonight's 2021 Met Gala livestream. [laughing]

And I cosign everything Keke said.

Keke, I just want to say congratulations

because you just won an Emmy last night. [cheering]

Oh my gosh, girlfriend!

Thank you. How's it feel?

I mean, I'm just really shook in my boots,

you know? Yeah.

It's just an exciting feeling.

It's always good to be acknowledged.

So thank you to the Emmys.

And I'm excited to be here with you.

Incredible, one night you're winning an Emmy,

next night you're hosting at the Met Gala, come on!

So the Met Gala is often referred to

as fashion's biggest night out

but it's also a fundraiser

for the Metropolitan Museum of Arts

Costume Institute here in New York City,

with stars in attendance

from the worlds of fashion, film,

television, sports, if you can believe it, politics,

and what can only be described as the internet,

all eyes are on this red carpet tonight

to see who is here and what they are wearing.

Welcome to the Met Gala.

Now with us to kick off the carpet

is the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour.

Anna, oh my gosh, you look so lovely.

Oh you look so, I don't even know if I can touch you,

you look so fabulous.

Now you must let me know,

I know everybody's gonna be asking you this tonight.

How did you come up with this beautiful design?

Who designed this dress?

Well, it was made for me

by the designers of Oscar de la Renta,

because of course it was the great Oscar de la Renta

that brought me to the museum in the first place.

So I wanted to honor my memory of him and my friendship.

Oh, I love that.

And Anna, you have been such,

such a vital part of the success of the Met Gala.

So tell us the inspiration behind

the Costume Institute's exhibition.

Well, Andrew Bolton,

who's the brilliant curator of the Costume Institute

wanted to celebrate the best of American fashion

and very much focus with this exhibition,

there's a second part that will open in next May,

but this one is really looking

at the future of American fashion.

70% of the exhibition focuses on young designers

that represent a whole patchwork of America,

so it's very diverse,

it's very inclusive, very sustainable

and I think it symbolizes

the fact that America is made up of

so many different cultures, so.

Yeah, I love the word choice that you use

of the patchwork, because that's definitely how it feels.

I mean, after going to so many of these,

what would you say is the most thrilling part

for you each time?

Well, I just love to see who,

I'm so grateful for the effort that people make

and how much fun they seem to have

and how fearless they are on the Met Gala carpet.

I think it's really a beacon call for individuality, so.

Yes and I mean, of course it's the theme is In America.

What excites you about the young designers today?

They're so creative.

They're so fearless and there's so much community,

they're all friends,

they know each other, they spend time together.

And I think it's a very hopeful sign

for the future of American fashion.

Oh, I love that, I love that

and this Met Gala is in September.

What is the significance of that for you?

Well, we wanted to close New York Fashion Week

because we felt if, once we announced the Met Gala

that would really represent the fact that New York was back

and we wanted to celebrate not only the museum,

the fashion community and the theater community,

the restaurant community,

just really be a symbol for New York.

[Keke] Oh, I love it, because honey,

New York is definitely back.

It's never going anywhere.

Thank you so much Anna. Thank you.

I'm so happy to be here, thank you.

This evening's theme is In America, okay,

inspired by the Costume Institute's upcoming exhibition,

which opens on September 18th,

the first of a two-part exhibition,

In America: A Lexicon of Fashion

explores how has evolved throughout America's history.

The aesthetic of fashion reflects our experiences

and while glamorous, fun and exciting,

I mean it also holds themes like diversity,

sustainability and inclusivity.

The patchwork seen throughout tonight's event

represents our community,

the different cultures, the traditions,

all of which define American fashion.

So tonight we'll celebrate all things American fashion,

the creations and designers

who helped define American style.

You can expect to see many homages

to the greatest in American fashion

from yesterday and today.

The first costume exhibition

at the Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Met

also marks the Institute's 75th anniversary.

We got your front row seats right here.

The people are just arriving.

This is so exciting.

It's my first ever make Met Gala, you guys.

I mean, this is pretty,

this is pretty cool.

Ilana, how are you feeling so far?

I mean, we just getting into it girlfriend,

you know, have the nerves chilled?

How do we feel? [Ilana laughing]

The nerves have chilled,

I'm now just very much in anticipation.

How was your carpet walk?

[Keke] My carpet walk was good.

I kept trying to give a lot of back.

I'ma give a lot of back to the stream.

[Ilana] Oh, your back is sick.

[Keke] Give it some respect,

pay no attention to my FB, I'm working.

[Ilana] I see my back here on this camera.

[both laughing]

[Keke] Next we have Adam Mosseri,

very excited to talk to him.

I mean, he's the creator of Instagram

and anybody that knows me,

knows I love Instagram.

So it's going to be great to speak to him.

[Ilana] That's cool. So many fun things

happening tonight.

And I really am happy that New York is back girl,

because for a minute I was getting spooked, honey.

I know it really,

this summer has been super romantic.

Everyone has been like just dancing around New York.

Did you see that marching band that kicked it off?

You know I did. They were playing our girl B.

Oh, it was so good.

It really got me going.

Yes, yes. [Ilana laughing]

Definitely got me going.

When it came up,

I was like, thank you brother,

thank you brother, thank you sister.

[Ilana] Look at these two dudes on these steps.

Just holding it down.

[Keke] I know, there is so much

[Ilana] security. They are just

holding it down, yeah. [Ilana laughing]

[Keke] There's so much security girl.

[Ilana] Yeah, I've seen a lot of dogs

and I'm realizing they're not,

they're not sniffing for weed.

[Keke laughing]

It's kinda the first time I don't have it on me.

So I'm really feeling actually at ease.

[Keke] Now Ilana, who are you wearing?

[Ilana] I am wearing Jason Rembert,

the creator of Aliette.

[Keke] Do you know him? Yes, I do.

[Keke] Oh God, he's a doll. Oh my gosh,

so that's an original? Yes.

This is original, hand-sewn piece by piece.

And also his mother's name is in the train, Aliette.

[Keke] [gasping] Oh my gosh.

The name of the Aliette is his mother's name.

And it's sewn in.

I'm going to post a picture of just that patchwork.

[Keke] It's such beautiful detail. So, does this mean

that you get to keep your dress?

Cause I got to give mines back.

I don't know, I was like,

I'll return it tomorrow and waiting, anticipating.

Hi there, hey.

She said hi there.

[Woman] Gorgeous, that is awesome. We got to pass it.

[Ilana] Fashion with a sting. Wow.

Love it, beautiful.

[Keke] This is the calm before the storm, good grief.

[Ilana] Oh, that's cool, man.

Wait to see this fabulous queen

repping the equal rights amendment coming up at ya.

Oh my gosh, you're honestly going to be shocked.

And it's really crazy that we,

it's not a thing yet.

Yeah, look at her.

Hello, hello, hello.

We have Adam Mosseri next

and his beautiful wife, Mrs. Mosseri.

[Ilana] Yes!

Oh, you don't have to apologize for making me wait.

I'll wait forever for the person

that I have to thank for Instagram.

Oh, you look amazing as well and so do you.

Wonderful to meet you.

Oh, this is for you.

So Adam, I have to ask you,

how do you think Instagram,

and this might be biased, you know obviously,

because we have you to thank for Instagram,

but how do you think it's influenced, you know, fashion?

Well, broadly speaking,

it's always been a platform for creatives.

Yeah and we want to be a place

where anybody can turn a passion into profit.

So, for fashion,

like a lot of the other creative industries,

we hope to be a place where people can take interest, oh.

[Keke] Let me grab this one from you, that one was out.

[Keke] Does this one work? This one does work.

[Keke] All right. Yes, yes.

It's a place for creatives.

It's a place for creatives,

it's a place anyone with a compelling idea

to turn that idea into a living.

So our hope is to try and be a platform

where anyone can push boundaries,

can tell their story, can push culture forward.

So, that's our hope.

Well, you've definitely done that.

It's because of you that I won an Emmy last night.

So thank you so much. Congratulations.

And then of course I have to ask the questions

that everybody wanna know,

who designed your look,

how did you guys decide it?

You know, with the theme being In America.

Yeah, so I obviously went with an American,

two American designers.

This is from Kamperett,

it's a small company in San Francisco,

two female designers.

They happen to be our neighbors

and they're super lovely

and they want to do custom

and they just pulled this out

and it looks beautiful

and I feel very grateful.

It does, it's giving me a modern feel,

but still having that old school take

with the corset and this beautiful headpiece,

it's beautiful. Thank you so much.

And I'm a huge fan of Bodhi.

So trying to find an amazing designer,

she was the first person who came to mind

and some pretty wild fabric she had going on.

So I figured let's just try it out.

Oh, I love it.

Now, who are you most excited to see tonight?

I know who I am. Oh, actually,

you have to go first.

[Both] Rihanna. Oh, okay.

And Lil Nas X. I know, right.

I mean, Serena, I always get. Yes.

You know, I mean really, she's incredible.

She's top of my list.

I'm excited to see Lewis Hamilton.

Yes Lewis Hamilton.

I heard he was going to be here

and I'm a big fan of Formula One.

A lot of amazing new

and upcoming designers. Yes.

Christopher John Roberts is going to be here and others.

So we're just excited to enjoy it.

I love that you're a man that knows many things.

Not only do you know the social world

but you also know the fashion world, huh?

You try to learn what you can.

[Keke laughing]

I love it, thank you both so much.

Wonderful to meet you.

And I hope you have a great night. I'll see you inside.

Thank you and congratulations.

Thank you.

[Ilana] Okay, so we'll check out, gotcha.

Oh lovely.

Oh my gosh, those glasses was giving me life as well.

I'm a glasses girl too.

I got my contacts in tonight though.

[Ilana] That was great Keke.

Oh, thanks love.

It was so, I mean,

I was kinda like low key fanning out,

because I mean, I love Instagram.

Instagram literally has given me so much freedom

coming into the industry as a traditional talent.

You are so good on Insta. Girl, stop.

No, you are. [Ilana laughing]

Keep going. You are and isn't it crazy,

it's like in our hand all day,

but then like the dude is right before you.

I know. It's strange,

strangely accessible.

Like I could have gone all day being like,

you know, what made you create it?

And like, how did you do the coding?

And can you show me? Yeah.

He knew a lot, he knew a lot of stuff. So, okay.

So we're going to check out some fan questions right now.

[Keke] Oh, yeah.

Turn to the socials

and see what fans have been asking.

Okay.

Oh, I'm like an old lady, zooming in

to read it.

[Keke] Oh, is it overwhelming to wear

a beautiful outfit from the best designers,

you go first Ilana.

Overwhelming. I guess it's overwhelming in a positive way.

I usually think of that as like a negative, but yeah,

I'm like overwhelmed with gratitude to Jason Rembert

for designing this for me.

But it's also like really elegant.

He really seems to know how to dress a woman,

a man who names a clothing line

or even any project ever his mother,

I was like, I can slip into this.

And really embody this, I'm loving it.

How about you Keke?

Is it overwhelming?

I mean, it can be but you just gots to own it.

You know, you gotta own it.

I came into this thing, okay, my first Met Gala girl.

We know the idea,

we know the assignment. Right.

Just go in there and work it at the end of the day

confidence is the best outfit.

That's right.

What designer are you wearing Keke?

I'm wearing Sergio Hudson. Oh!

And this was the finale look

at his current, most current collections.

Could we get a little spin?

Oh I thought you'd never ask.

Yeah, see this.

Oh we gotta see it full body. I'm giving you some back.

Yeah do it again.

[Keke] I know we got a little mic.

[Ilana] So gorgeous,

it's as though you got the tattoos for the dress Keke.

And I need you to know I've been rowing in the gym

to get this back. Yes!

Like it is. Nice.

So just know that this line that you'll see it,

it isn't just, I wasn't born with it.

Nice, well, I'm glad to know that, it gives me hope.

[Keke laughing]

Okay, we're going to check out one more question.

And I'm going to not lean in like an old lady,

how much preparation and collaboration was involved

in your look for this year's Met Gala?

This to be honest was a Jason Rembert original.

He had a few looks that were set to go

and I looked at a few sketches

and this one I knew I would feel most comfortable in.

And it's like both intricate yet easy.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is quite intricate.

I love the different layering that you have.

It's like giving a camo vibe, but it's like.

Hand sewn yes, piece by piece.

And camo you usually think of more like streetwear.

Yes.

But how eleganza it is, I'm like,

he really made the tension, he created tension there.

I love the word choice, eleganza.

Yeah, Jason Rembert eleganza, Aliette.

Now what was the question?

I was going to try to answer it, but I.

Like collaboration, what was your process?

Yeah, so I think, you know,

it was more so working with Vogue's team,

giving kind of like a, you know,

working with stylist, Seth

to give kind of the idea and look we were going for,

and then having their support too, connecting us to Sergio

and Anna had a lot to do with helping me decide my look

and it was just a collaboration all around the board.

Yeah, shout out to Willow and Sergio for me as well.

Yes, shout out to Willow and Sergio.

It was a thing, and also, Irene Neuwirth is the jewels,

so beautiful, both like dreamy and like candy-like,

and yet, edgy.

Yes, I believe these are Chopard.

Gorg.

Give me like a little New Age hoop

with a little ruby at the bottom.

Yeah gorg.

Little Titanic old, I'm kidding.

[Ilana laughing]

Now be sure to check out vogue.com you guys

for more of Anna Wintour sharing the history

of the Met Gala red carpet,

because I mean, we're making our own history tonight okay?

[Ilana] That's right.

Let's check in on some of your fan poll results.

The question was, who has been

your favorite couple on the red carpet?

Who has been my favorite couple on the red carpet?

That's hard.

[Ilana] I think I'm talking Grimes and Elon Musk later,

that's been a, that's been an interesting.

They're really interesting couple for sure.

Yeah. Yeah, we have Camila Cabello

as well with them, Sean Mendez coming too.

So there'll be,

I wonder what that's like getting ready with your look.

I know, I think that's cute couples coordinating together.

I wish my husband would do that more.

And also, I mean,

let's think about the sister couples Gigi and Bella

have had plenty of iconic looks at the Met Gala.

And if there's anyone who knows about iconic looks,

it's the one and only Anna Wintour,

who shares her favorites from the red carpets past

in this special video, check it out you guys.

[upbeat music]

Hello everyone, I'm Anna winter.

Join me as I look through

some of my very favorite Met looks over the years.

[upbeat music]

This is from China: Through the Looking Glass

and my particular favorite of course

is Grace Coddington right there in the middle

because Grace was so happy to be wearing this outfit

because she was going straight from the Met to the airport.

This is Rock Style in the late 90s,

Stella tells the story that she really had no idea

what the Met Gala was

and went to the East Village that afternoon

and sewed these t-shirts herself

and arrived on the red carpet and was,

as she told me later, completely in shock.

What's wonderful about the Met

is that people feel very fearless.

And I think that gives them license to dress in a way

that they might not normally

and certainly this image was one of them.

The full video is on vogue.com

so make sure you guys go ahead and check that out.

We have people coming up on the carpet,

I'm seeing quite an amazing look.

I'm trying to make out who this beautiful woman is.

Yeah. That's the Equal Rights Amendment woman,

I'm loving her look, she is slaying.

[Keke] Oh it's so beautiful, yes.

And that hair is fabulous too.

People don't know, it's not just the outfit or the dress

or the gown or whatever you want to call it

but it's also the hair and the makeup

that really brings it all together.

I mean, truly.

[Ilana] She was serving such a pose, I love how,

how she used this platform tonight.

[Keke] Right.

Yeah that is beautiful.

It's always good when you bring a message.

You can never go wrong with a powerful message.

[Ilana] Yeah it's serving a thick look,

when you bring a message,

it really adds layers there, I'm loving it.

[Keke] Yes, yes, pun intended because she has some layers.

[Ilana] Yeah that's true too. [laughing]

[Keke] On the dress. It's true.

[Keke] And you were just telling me how exciting it is,

the fact that everybody's vaccinated.

I think that's amazing.

[Ilana] I am loving that. I know, I know.

[Ilana] About this event.

Yeah I like that look, that Equal Rights Amendment look

because fashion is such a female centric art,

which is what makes it so fun and inclusive.

[Keke] Yeah, it is, it is.

[Ilana] Okay, there's Tom Ford just sharp,

[Keke] flawless and sharp. Oh my gosh.

[Ilana] I don't know who this woman is on the carpet

but she's just look at her, just her.

Oh, gorgeous.

[Keke] It's so theatrical,

[Ilana] you know what I mean? Yeah.

[Keke] The whole energy of it all.

And this is just the beginning,

like we haven't even seen anything yet Ilana.

[Ilana] Yeah it's so New York.

[Keke] It's about to turnt up.

[Ilana] About itself, you know what I mean?

I didn't realize that there was such an audience

[Keke] outside on the street. Yes.

[Ilana] Kind of like at a concert,

they're like behind the metal, barrier sort of thing.

[Keke] And it's kind of crazy, right?

Because this is our first red carpet girl and like,

I think what two years, I mean, for me.

[Ilana] Yeah. I mean, oh, it's also zero to 100.

[Keke] It's so insane.

[Ilana] There's no easing here.

[Keke] Yeah Zero to a hundred, exactly.

Not only do, there's our first carpet back,

you know, red carpet but it's the red carpet,

it's the Met Gala.

[Ilana] Yeah, I just had a baby 12 weeks ago,

I have not been going out at all.

I've been like a baby myself. [Keke laughing]

It's really crazy to be here.

[Keke] Yeah I just need you guys to know that,

that Ilana looks much larger on the screen,

she's actually five foot. [Ilana laughing]

Five one. Oh I took one away.

You took an inch away, I can't take that inch,

I can't take that inch like that from you.

[Ilana laughing]

I got so few to count from.

Timothee, coming for you Keke.

Oh Timothee, he's arrived. Timothee.

But now let's get into some of these polls

or these fan questions,

I want to see what's up with our social.

We got to make sure we keep checking in with them.

Okay.

What was your first reaction to the 2021 Met Gala theme?

Hmm, I did like what I just did, I went hmm.

Right, right, right.

'Cause I was like, it's appropriate.

We like, we have gotten, we took out the garbage,

Rhianna's amazing post, we took out some garbage,

we are just back and post, I'm like God bless America.

[Keke singing]

I'm like really loving my fellow Americans.

[Keke laughing]

Which is why I'm vaccinated.

Right. [laughing] [Ilana laughing]

I love that full circle connection that we just had.

Yeah and.

Definitely when I heard it I had the same reaction and I,

and it kind of gives you this thing where you're like,

yes, of course I know it's, yes, America of course I get it.

[Ilana] Look at this beauty, yes.

[Keke] I love that.

[Ilana] It's a drag race, come on.

[Keke] Come on drag race.

[Ilana] Come on drag race.

[Keke] It's fun, I like the fun of it.

[Ilana] Dude I can't believe this crowd work.

[Keke] And you hear these people screaming, yes.

Somebody's come through.

They're excited.

[Ilana] Okay, we're starting to roll over here.

[Ilana] It's a vision darling, it's a vision.

[Keke] Yeah, wow.

[Ilana] Who are you most excited to see Ilana?

I don't think I asked you.

[Ilana] Rihanna. Yeah.

[Ilana] Of course, I'm just like, wow, wow.

[Keke] Yeah, we just know it's going to be incredible.

[Ilana] To be in the presence of a God.

[Keke] Oh yeah I see Timothee right now coming up.

[Ilana] Yeah he's coming for ya.

He was like Keke, where's Keke,

I was like chill dude, chill. [Keke laughing]

[Keke] Ilana stop it!

[Ilana] I was like Timothee, chill dog.

[Keke] I love that that's how you pronounce it, Timothee.

[Ilana] Well, I just learned that's the pronunciation.

So I'm just trying to.

[Keke] I wonder where he's from, for it to be,

Maybe he's just a really cool American.

[crowd cheering]

[Ilana] It's really funny to see super fancy,

high class people in a tent. [Keke laughing]

That's that's a funny contrast

before they get like they're like gorgeous pictures taken.

[Keke] Yeah, right, right, right,

it's the levels it's called balance.

[Ilana] That's right, yes, that's right.

Well rounded. [Keke laughing]

It is levels for sure.

Look at this fringe look, I'm loving it.

That's gorgeous.

That is a couple that coordinated.

[Keke] Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

[Ilana] Beautiful, complimenting each other.

Oh wow, oh my gosh.

[Keke] Yeah Marcus Samuelsson looks fabulous.

I love, I have his book too at home.

He looks so dope,

it looks like something very cultural too that he's wearing.

[Ilana] Yeah, something filled with honor.

[Keke] Yeah, absolutely.

It looks lovely.

That hat is fabulous too, with that red underneath.

[Ilana] Yeah.

[Keke] Give you a little pop, his wife looks lovely.

[Ilana] Yeah, they are such a set tonight.

[Keke] What do they, you know, the old school kids,

there's such a pair.

[Ilana] Right, right.

[Keke] My parents always say this, such a pair.

[Ilana] I'm jealous of Mr. Chalamet's sneakers.

[Keke] Oh I gotta peep those

because I haven't been able to see him,

he's so deep down on the stairs.

I just love how he's able to mix high fashion elements

with like just being chilled too and young,

[Ilana] you know what I mean? Yeah.

[Keke] Like having fun with it,

keeping it youthful and you know, chill,

like he's crouched down and giving us a little vibe.

[Ilana] Yeah.

[Keke] I just like, it let's have fun with it.

You know, sometimes, people can get themselves intimidated

when it comes to fashion

but I think he's, he's given a relatability.

[Ilana] Now he serves, he serves looks.

[Keke] Come on looks.

I love it, he got the suit on with the wife beater gag.

[Ilana] Yeah come on man.

[Keke] It's the layers for me.

[Ilana] Such a mix, yes layers.

[Keke] Okay, you guys,

the moment that y'all been waiting for,

we have coming up here Timothee Chalamet.

It's so hard when everybody's screaming at you.

[Ilana] You're cutting through.

[Keke] I really do wonder what the inspo is behind this,

this drag look.

[Ilana] I love the different, oh the drag race look,

yeah that is really good,

maybe she just is a huge fan of RuPaul's Drag Race.

[Keke] I cannot.

Who is this in this pink?

I see a little sliver of pink.

[Ilana] You know, it's like a funny aspect of this event

is that it's a charity event.

[Keke] I know, yes. [laughing]

[Ilana] I keep forgetting then I remember.

And I'm like, yeah.

[Keke] No, because it's sometimes that's how it,

you know, when it, when we're,

you're trying to serve up a cause

you gotta bring all that energy to it.

[Ilana] It really does celebrate the heck.

Now I heard your preparation for tonight

was quite a production, tell me a little bit.

Yeah, we did a bit of a,

you know, we met when we were 17 or 18.

Where? Vogue.

Oh really?

We did the young Hollywood shoot.

My mom has always with me, shout out to my mom.

Shout out to mom,

shout out to mom. Yes.

So I gotta let you know.

I see the layers. Thank you.

You're giving us that, the Converse on.

I mean how did you come up with this look, man,

you're just trying to?

No, this is just,

this is a bit of everything,

was kind of my homage to Chuck Taylor's,

got Rick Owens underneath,

Haider Ackermann, the guy that's taking pictures right now.

I see you're feeling it, you really are feeling it.

I'm in sweatpants so.

Now you're playing very interesting characters.

I know for me, when I get into a world,

the costume you get into it,

how was that for you, was it the same?

Man, the exact same.

I'm the exact same.

Conversation because it's true,

costume really helps you get into character.

They really do, until I put the look on.

You are also co-chair tonight for you.

Feels like a stupid honor and it's a big,

stupidly big honor, just put it like that.

Yeah, thanks. [laughing]

Yeah, no, no, just a big honor.

And trying to keep it respectful

of the two years, all of us just had

and not get too lost in the glamor of it

because a lot of people are suffering.

[Keke] So true.

It's like, you want to have fun and enjoy your life

but you also want to be acknowledging

what's going on with everybody else, I understand.

I'll have to ask you, I mean,

you really are emerging as this fashion icon.

Does it give you a lot of pressure?

Was fashion always something you're into.

No, I feel like it's an example of the night

because I was like wow I feel like

a lot of pressure for the Met, Converse.

[Keke laughing]

I love it, enjoy yourself baby.

Yes, that's true, come on guys, you really do,

I mean fashion can be quite intense.

Nicola, I know Nicola.

You look wonderful.

It's so good to see you, how are you love.

Good how are you? Good to see you.

So beautiful.

Oh my gosh, right now I'm wearing Sergio Hudson,

who are you wearing?

Valentino.

Ooh, so how did you come up with this look,

I feel like it's very fitting.

[Woman] On mic or do you have those two link,

those two microphones.

Honestly it was the first dress

I tried on fell in love with it.

[Woman] Hello, hello.

True story, I have never said that before.

Oh my gosh and how about you?

You guys are coming as a pair tonight.

Valentino, can't go wrong so.

Oh my gosh, how did you guys decide

to put your looks together,

I mean, was that nerve wracking?

She tried this on and then I kind of, I matched her so.

You know, that's how it really goes.

That's the real real.

How excited are you to be back out?

I mean, we've been in the house girl,

we haven't been on a red carpet in a minute,

were you nervous,

were you just ready to get out and about again?

So excited to be able to be with people,

we love being around people

and like communicating, you know.

Showing the love, showing the love.

Yep, showing the love.

How's Will, your brother?

Shout out to Will, yes.

He's so happy. Yes, yes.

Well you look absolutely fabulous.

What are you most excited about tonight?

Kind of seeing old friends

and people we haven't seen in a minute, yeah.

It's definitely going to be a reunion,

I've seen everybody walking through this.

I mean I've seen people come up here,

they look absolutely amazing. Everyone looks amazing.

Yeah, and I mean, speaking of the fashion,

the theme is In America what does that mean to you guys?

Well, I'm trying to make him an American, right now.

I don't want him to go back to his country?

[Brooklyn laughing]

Wait, where are you, where are you from?

I'm from London.

Oh from I'm from London,

so we just get you for a little while, not for a long while?

Yeah, well we live in L.A. so.

I've kidnapped him.

Well I'm always here for a good kidnapping, okay.

A fair trade ain't never been a robbery.

You guys have a wonderful time.

You look like, oh. So beautiful.

Thank you very much.

Enjoy yourselves, enjoy yourselves.

Old friends, it's always good

running into old friends, yes.

Oh, this is such a nice time.

How you doing, how you doing?

[Ilana] Okay, things are heating up Keke.

[Keke] Things are heating up mama.

[Ilana] It's starting to move.

[Keke] Literally and figuratively girl,

I'm up here sweating, how you doing?

[Ilana] I'm doing good in here,

I just saw David Byrne and I was like, couldn't,

from the Talking Heads, I couldn't really, speak.

[Keke] You couldn't even say anything, yeah.

[Ilana] That was so cute, they looked really cute.

[Keke] They were so cute.

[Ilana] Princess and prince.

[Keke] Yes, we've got James Corden

at the bottom of the carpet,

I loved him in Into the Woods honey,

I'm about to fan out.

[Ilana] Yeah, he's getting a break from hosting tonight

and he's just simply a guest.

[Keke] I had some fun with him on his show.

Yes, right now we've got Leon Bridges, Leon Bridges.

How are you, Leon?

It's good to see you.

Okay, I'm seeing a lot of good influences.

Please tell me how you came up with this look,

it's very, it's giving me America for sure.

For sure, for sure, you know, like, you know,

I'm from Texas and you know,

I obviously don't represent the politics there.

[Keke laughing] But you know what I'm saying like.

[Keke] I feel you on that man.

Right, right but you know, but it's all about embodying,

you know, the aesthetic of Texas.

[Woman] Sure, of course.

And you know, it's a little fringe in there right,

you gotta rock the cowboy hat.

And I think it's so true what you said too,

'cause it's like, you could be a patriot, love Texas

but also be able to differentiate

from things you don't want,

you know, you can still represent your country, love,

but still also be able to separate yourself

from things that you don't really love.

I love that because a lot of people feel like

you got to do one or the other, you know what I mean?

So I love to see this representation on you brother

it looks fabulous.

Now who exactly, designed it?

Indeed so Rock and Bodie

and iome Cartier.

So yeah. And I'm loving it.

You gotta give me a little tern right here.

So I want to see the jewels in your hair.

Okay, we getting the jewels in the hair, honey yes.

In the hair.

And we've got the jewels in a mouth too.

You dig, it's all Texas you know.

Yes, I love it.

So what are you most excited about?

Is this your first Met Gala?

'Cause this is mine.

This is my third.

I'm always honored to, to be invited

and I think it's beautiful that, you know,

it's an opportunity to be in the same room

with some really awesome people, you know?

And so yeah, here to have a good time.

Oh, I love it, I love it.

I'm here to have a good time too.

Thank you so much, you look so fabulous, man.

Thank you you too.

It's good speaking with you, enjoy yourself.

Have a good one. Yes.

Oh, I love that.

Such good energy, it's such good energy you guys,

I feel like we all are just so happy to be,

having that human connection again in this way

and you know, as corny as it sounds, we're all artists,

so we're all very sensitive,

so it's good to just connect, you know what I mean?

So good, so good.

Ah, James, it's good to see you darling.

[James] Nice to see you.

How are you now? Very good.

I mean, you're looking fabulous tonight,

please tell me, how did you design this look and what,

how does it connect to? [James laughing]

It's a black tux, let's not start getting carried away.

You weren't buying it. No.

You weren't buying the compliments.

No, no, I appreciate it,

but let's start talking about this

like it's anything more than it,

it's a nice tux.

Who designed it?

It's a Gucci tux. Oh okay.

And yes, it's nice.

Now what does the Met Gala mean to you

because you've got the Gucci tux,

but it's still very casual, so what's the vibe?

Well, it mostly means to me that I just get to see like,

you know, there's really incredibly creative,

brilliant people here,

so if you ever get to be in a room with, you know,

Amanda Gorman, Billie Eilish,

why wouldn't you want to see if

some of that creativity will fall around your feet

and you can pick some up and see if

you can do anything with it. Oh my gosh.

You know, there's really, really amazing people in there

and you always feel overwhelmed

to be in the same room as them.

And it's, it's always a thrill, yeah.

I love it and you're one to talk,

I mean, you are amazing

and you've also worn some really amazing outfits,

like in movie, The Prom did you go to keep any of them

in case you wanted to get a little razzle-dazzle

to the supermarket?

I didn't keep any of them, you know,

I never was an option for me,

so that's made me think actually,

maybe I should get into that

although there maybe, yeah I dunno.

And one, one amazing thing,

another amazing thing you did outside of, Into the Woods

was getting the Friends cast back together again,

what was the best part of that reunion?

Well, I mean, I was a very small part of it,

so it just, I mean, it's just them being together

was lovely, it was really, it was an amazing thing

to just look at the sets and stuff was brilliant, yeah.

Well, I love it, we thank you for that

and enjoy your night good to see you again love.

Yes, yes, I really did love him

in Into the Woods honey, he could sing.

He killed it as that baker.

[crowd screaming]

Okay, must be right after.

Should we get him set for after?

Good to see you man.

I'm here with I'm here with Dan Weiss

who's the present CEO of the Metropolitan Museum.

Dan, so the Met is just your office?

It is my office, it's the best office in the world.

I come here every day.

Do you just walk in and you're like,

this is my workplace, I mean, what does it look like?

A day in the life of Dan Weiss?

The biggest worry I always had when I came

is that I would get used to it and I never have.

It's one of the great spaces in the world,

so I come to work every day and in between meetings,

I walk around and I look at things, it's great.

How long have you been there?

Seven years.

And what does the Met Gala mean to you?

Well, it's a great chance for us

to show a part of the museum that's fun, that's open,

that connects with the public

and it's so gratifying to see how

the world takes an interest

in what we do and how we connect with the world of fashion.

It's a great event for us.

[Ilana] Okay A Night at the Museum, the movie,

were you hanging around?

Were you in video village?

You're chilling, you're watching the filming,

what was the deal?

A Night at the Museum here?

It's great, well, among other things

we have about 60 exhibitions with beds.

So if you get tired,

you can take a nap anywhere in the museum

because we have all these period rooms

that are actually set up.

Truly you can lay down.

Well, no, you're not supposed.

And I'm not authorizing that, I'm just saying.

Okay, Dan, all right.

So tonight I shouldn't lie to you,

I just had a baby, so I,

I really am looking for a place to take a seat

but not in the exhibit.

Right, we have chairs for that

but if you got stuck in the museum overnight,

there are places to go.

Okay, cool.

Well, it's funny to see like bondage costumery

just behind you.

It's a little bit of everything.

Yeah, it got me a little distracted.

Thank you so much for having us all here tonight.

[Dan] It's a pleasure, we're delighted you're here

I hope you have a fun time tonight

and we all will as well.

[Ilana] Cool.

Right now I am with fashion designer, Jerry Lorenzo,

Jerry, it is so good to finally meet you

because all my homeboys are always talking about you

and what you're doing out here in the streets.

Oh, I love to hear that and it's so nice to meet you too.

How are you doing tonight?

I mean, this is the first Met Gala back

when the world is getting up charged again,

how does it feel to be here?

Whether it's back or been away, I have never been here.

So this is like all very like humbling and exciting for me.

So I'm just happy to be a part of it.

And you're very much known for elevated street fashion.

I mean, it has really taken the fashion industry by storm.

How do you feel about its evolution

over the past few years?

I just think that, you know,

artists that we're known as, you know,

streetwear designers are now

getting the access to resources

that are expanding their lexicon or vocabulary,

so to speak.

And we're able to express our point of view

at a higher level,

moving into suiting and tailoring and other categories.

And so it's been a great Renaissance

and I'm happy to be a part of it

and excited about the growth ahead.

[Keke] Yeah, speaking of that In America is the theme.

How do you feel about that to you,

like what does that mean to you?

Well, they have what's like

in this like sportswear section

and I'm wearing sweat pants today and you know,

I think they used a quote around a quote

and yeah, when I, when I think of a quilt,

I think about my grandma using,

whether they're rags or old blankets or t-shirts

and tying together, whatever you can

to help, you know, keep the grandkids warm

and so as a fashion designer and growing up in fashion,

I've kind of had to get dressed in the same way, you know,

whether I'm borrowing my dad's blazer

and putting it against my sweat pants.

[Keke] Boxers and your jeans.

Exactly and so it's like,

we've had to take what we've been given

and make something beautiful and say one cohesive thing.

And it's very similar to,

kind of what we're celebrating today.

[Keke] Oh, I love it.

Well, thank you so much, Jerry, have a great time.

This is my first Met Gala too.

So we're gonna enjoy ourselves, alrighty, take care, yes.

[people chattering]

You look fabulous.

So, hi, I'm here with.

Hi, Nina Hollein

And Max Hollein.

And what, what designer did you work with

to create this look tonight?

So this dress, I made it myself.

You made it yourself, oh my God, it's gorgeous.

Isn't that independent.

That's right, that is American independence.

The theme In America.

Wow, that is fabulous.

So what was the process like putting this together?

Well, pretty interesting.

I'm a designer myself, so

and I'm working very much with sustainable fashion.

So I patchwork the whole thing,

which I think suits very much the topic of tonight.

Wow, have you incorporated sustainability

into your work more and more?

It feels like it's coming into the fashion world

increasingly these days.

Yes, I've been working on this for many years now.

I'm using sustainable fabrics

and recycling and upcycling a lot

and try to make it right.

That's really beautiful,

congratulations, that's beautiful.

And what designer are you wearing?

I'm wearing mainly the American spirit,

this is actually Xenia so not an American designer,

but I'm accompanying my wife,

to kind of celebrate this great show here.

Gorgeous, you look like a great pair,

you're really a fitting,

congratulations on this look, beautiful.

[Max] Have a good night. Thank you.

[crowd screaming]

[people chattering]

American fashion, I'm sitting here thinking about it.

I'm like, what does it mean to me?

I really do think it means like taking what you have

and making something of it.

Because I feel like that's, you know,

especially as a black woman in America,

I mean, that's what I feel represents it for me

is always making a way out of no way

and turning lemons into lemonade.

I mean, when I think about Black American culture,

that's like, so representative of America as a whole to me

and so I really definitely like envision that diversity

and that patchwork that they're talking about, you know,

of all the different cultures

that really make America, America.

Yeah and also just slaying looks, I think,

as Black American fashion, that is what I'm.

Come on now sister. That's what it means to me.

I've seen Balenciaga making some boxers in jeans,

a new look, I'm sitting there honey,

we've been doing that. Yeah hello.

Doing that in Chicago for years.

Yeah, that's, American culture is Black American culture.

Now let's get into it.

But I think of with American fashion, I think of levels,

which you said before Keke, I'm like, you know,

jeans with heels, you can like wear it up

and you can also wear like, you know,

a dress during the day with sneakers and wear it down.

Okay. The versatility.

It is, we're versatile people, what can we say?

You know, what can we say?

Oh my gosh, I'm seeing the beautiful Amanda Gorman.

Oh she looks so gorgeous, I saw her earlier.

What a visionary. Yes.

Yes, I'm trying to get to her.

Let's look at a social question really quickly though.

See check-in with our, with our viewers.

What the saying Ilana?

Who inspires you most in fashion?

I mean, I just,

it's like I could answer Rihanna for everything.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Did you see that Dazed spread?

I'm just like her poses and also it's like, not even about,

it's about the collaboration of the moment with her.

Yeah. Damn.

I'm going to say Rihanna as well,

could also back with Diana Ross.

But wait a minute, wait a minute.

I'm with the true American icon, Amanda Gorman.

How are you, girl you look so fabulous.

Oh my gosh, so tell me,

how did you come up with creating this look?

What does it mean to you?

Well, first I have to say, it's an honor to meet you.

We're not going to roll over that by the way, hey.

[Keke] Stop it.

I've loved you since I was a little girl.

So this is a huge moment for me.

[Keke] Oh my god.

To actually answer your real question.

I'm wearing Vera Wang tonight, thank you.

[Keke] Pose real quick.

And I really wanted to lean into the spirit

of the Statue of Liberty,

which I think is really kind of thematic for tonight.

We thought super carefully about my outfit.

So for example, with the crown, wearing laurels,

which for poets is where the word poet laureate comes from,

which I've been honored to be given that title.

So just trying to think of ways

that my own identity can kind of intersect with her.

Yes and the original one was given from Paris

and it was a Black woman,

So I think it's very on trend love, yes.

Now Amanda over the last two years,

we have seen our country shift so much.

How has that impacted your intentions as a poet,

as a talent, I mean, we saw what you did at the White House.

So what has that really given you going forth?

I think it just really undercuts to me my duty as a poet,

which is to try to use words to heal, to question,

to interrogate and to most importantly to hope.

Oh thank you.

Oh, wait a minute, now this tell me about this clutch.

Give us your tired now, now what does this mean Miss. Mama?

So the Statue of Liberty, as you may know, holds a book,

which is very on-brand for me because I love reading

but at the base of the Statue of Liberty,

there's actually a poem

and one of the lines is, give me your tired

and I wanted to kind of be purposed that for tonight.

I wanted the energy and the spirit of my outfit

to be about America, welcoming the world.

So I have this tonight.

Oh my gosh, I love that, I love the thought process.

Your mind is incredible.

Now fashion much like poetry

can be a wonderful form of self-expression.

So how do you express yourself through your fashion choices,

outside of this Met Gala moment?

Well, for me fashion, just like poetry,

just writing is its own form of language.

It's its own form of rhetoric.

So I try to use that as much to speak truth to power.

So it's walking in my truth as a Black woman, showing up,

creatively, imaginatively and being fierce

and unapologetic with what I wear.

Yes I love it, now tonight is going to be filled

with tons of memorable moments,

is there anything particular that you're looking forward to?

Rihanna period.

Yeah I mean, it's like at this point it's like,

this is the Rihanna Gala. Yes.

Like we ready to get into it.

We're ready, okay.

Well enjoy yourself, you look fabulous.

And I can't wait to see you later.

Thank you so much. All right, bub-bye.

Oh I just love everything she's saying,

it's giving me life,

and this Statue of Liberty gag, look it up y'all,

the first one was given to us from Paris,

don't say I ain't told you nothing, okay.

Oh wow, this is just so nice.

It's just so good to see all the livelihood,

the energy, it's just like everybody just lively.

Happy to be out.

This is a gorgeous couple coming up the stairs.

Oh my gosh, the moments and the looks, keep them coming.

[people chattering]

Yeah, it was like a bondage, I love that.

Okay, it's a message, it's a message love.

Who?

Okay.

[laughing]

Yeah, let's do it, let's do it.

I need the, yeah.

Oh we got.

Straight out of the US Open is Felix Auger Aliassime,

please with your beautiful girlfriend.

You guys look beautiful.

How are you love?

I'm great, I'm great.

So happy to be here, it's crazy.

My first time so it's really exciting.

Oh it's my first time too,

so I'm excited right along with you.

I mean you have so much going on,

obviously, you're a great athlete.

How do you get prepared for coming to events like these?

Is it a different type of excitement and anxiety?

Yeah, I'm not used to it.

And I got the invite, you know, one week ago.

So I did not expect coming to New York

that I would end up here, you know,

at the end of my tournament,

I was just playing on the court three days ago.

So everything was last minute

trying to get fitted right between the matches.

I mean, last minute today, getting my suit so.

I'm happy that everything ended up being fine.

Oh yes and how do you feel about coming along

and being his date, is this your first Met Gala?

It's my first time, it's amazing.

The best thing I've done is prom so far,

so this is a small step up so. Oh, I love that, I love it.

Please come in a little deeper

so we can make sure we get both of you guys looks.

Now, I mean, first Met Gala, the theme is In America.

I'm not sure how much time you guys have spent in America.

So what did you do when you heard that theme?

How did you figure out to put your look together?

Well, no, we didn't have a lot of time,

like I said, I just had a few days of notice

but you know, I come often in America,

I mean, I think for me, America is the diversity,

the diversity of the country, all the looks.

I mean, my girlfriend is the definition of diversity

of parents being Moroccan and Croatian, international,

so myself also being, being mixed,

so I think that's for me, that's what it's about yeah.

Yeah, that's definitely is us over here,

especially in New York City, it's nothing but a melting pot.

Well, I hope you guys have a beautiful time tonight.

Enjoy yourselves, you look lovely.

Thank you. Thank you so much.

You're so welcome love, bub-bye.

Oh that's so nice, I love that energy.

It's so beautiful.

Oh, we got a lot of nice pairs in here Ilana.

[Ilana] Yeah, man, they got to see us together.

[Keke] I know we are such a hot couple.

Yeah the best accessory here at the Met Gala is a man.

Oh come on now Miss. Mamas, come on.

Keke, you should peep Barbie Ferreira,

she's in like pearls, do you see her?

I don't see Barbie yet,

I'm seeing a beautiful young lady right here.

She has given me such a look.

Wow, look at this girl.

[Keke] Hey Barbie, I just see Barbie now.

[Ilana] Stunning right?

Hey mama, yes, let's come up here please Barbie.

Oh my gosh we got my girl Barbie in here in the building.

We just did, we're doing a movie together right now.

Yes we are.

We are right now currently doing Nope.

How was it being, how are you sir?

Jonathan. Jonathan, nice to meet you,

hey Jonathan.

So Barbie, before I get into this amazing look,

I gotta ask you, how was it on set with Jordan?

Have you been having good time filming?

Absolutely, I am so fricking excited.

I know it.

Not due out for a year though, but it's okay.

I know. shout out to Brandon, shout out to Brandon.

So now let's get into this look.

How did you come up with this design

and how does it relate to America as the theme?

Well Jonathan and I came up with

kind of like a little burlesque Americana,

kind of like old Hollywood meets new Hollywood,

you know, kind of like that.

Yes both are in L.A. so we wanted to,

you know, we worked on this together,

I showed her the sketches

and we collaborated on this

and we wanted something spectacular,

represents old Hollywood with diamonds and pearls

and all the glam.

Yes and definitely even with the,

I always tell people, we always just think about the outfit

but also this makeup, the hair.

[Barbie] Thank you. How it all ties in.

I mean, goodness, and is this your first Met Gala?

Both of you guys first?

[Barbie] This is my first Met Gala for sure. [laughing]

[Jonathan] Second Met Gala.

Second Met Gala.

So when you heard the In America theme,

what clicked into your mind?

What was kind of how you started

to wrap your head around it?

I was just so excited to celebrate American fashion.

Obviously it's been a bit of a crazy 18 months

and I think we all really needed a celebration.

So it's a really great theme and I'm so excited to be here.

Yes, me too. And what are you most excited about

when you go inside Barbie?

To figure out what happens inside.

And I'm about to tell everybody,

so me and you about to be in there.

I'm Instagraming everything.

I don't know what happens when you get in there,

I still don't know but we will find out.

We will.

And I will let everyone know.

We will. Well enjoy yourself, have a great time.

You look so good girl, I'm so happy I got to see you again.

Yes. Love you.

Love too, boo.

You look so beautiful. Thank you Jonathan, yes.

Oh, that's so much fun.

I'm so happy to see my girl, we've been working so hard,

so it's nice that we both get out

to have a little bit of fun child.

I am here with Yara Shahidi, I am so excited Yara.

You are an actor and an activist and you're such,

I mean, the theme tonight is, you know,

American and you make me so excited

about the next generation of America. [laughing]

Thank you.

How do you feel about the theme tonight and expressing it?

It was exciting, I didn't necessarily know where to start

but I really ended up going into the archives

of Josephine Baker, who's somebody that I so admire

and I'm so I'm honored to be able to do

a rendition of any kind, instead of a regular cap,

we just made a braided one instead.

Switch it all the way.

We got to get the full look, look at Yara here.

Hopefully I get to see myself, thanks for this.

Look at you Yara, you are incredible.

So gorgeous.

[Yara] To my feet to my toes,

you don't know how crazy it look.

[Ilana laughing]

[Ilana] And who'd you work with to create this look?

This is made custom with Dior.

Gorgeous.

Well have so much fun tonight.

Thank you, I'll see you in.

Yeah, enjoy, see you in there.

[people screaming]

[upbeat music]

[Keke] Up in here tonight, how you doing?

Oh my gosh, it's really getting started, girl.

How's it going down on your side?

[Ilana] It's going good, it is, things are heating up.

Billie Eilish just came through.

I just spoke with Yara Shahidi.

We got the next generation of leaders coming in.

I know, I love me some Yara.

I can't wait to see her.

What was her looks vibe, I can see a little bit of it

but what was, what was the vision behind it?

It was Josephine Baker inspired, design with Dior,

incredible. You see what I'm saying?

Josephine Baker as a wonderful.

They know more than us. They do, Gen-Z,

I'm just so tired of them being just so on top of things.

I know, I know,

and Millennials, like at least what we have going for us

is that we know to look to them.

All we do is just really talk back.

We like break stuff but then they always like,

know how to clean it up and we're like,

you didn't even need to break that you know?

That's right. [laughing]

And that new Gen Alpha,

my nieces and my nephew they're telekinetic.

They can read minds at this point.

Oh, let's check in with the fans.

Okay, what are they telling us?

I cannot wait to see Saweetie's Met Gala look.

Well they are seconds away from seeing her

because she is right there at the bottom of the stairs.

She is dripping with beauty, wait 'til you see it.

I wonder who designed this look?

I can't wait to ask her because this is shining darling.

Yeah, it should, we should be getting a drum roll,

right now. Okay.

What else, what else are they saying? Are they voting?

Are the fans voting?

[Keke] Yeah what's up with the polls?

[Ilana] Oh, look at her.

Okay, here's a poll.

We're going to see what, how people are voting.

Who would you rather style for a Met Gala?

73% say Rihanna.

[Keke] Now I want all these people to quit it

because can't none of them style,

Beyonce nor Rihanna want y'all to style them, I'm kidding.

[laughing]

Oh, that's my thing,

you're gonna to style Beyonce or Rihanna.

I can't, I can't even.

[Keke] We gave them the choice just to take it away,

[Ilana] why we play like that? That's right.

[Keke] Oh, this orange that I'm seeing

come up the stairs is looking fabulous, who is that?

Well, she's gorgeous.

[Man] Was whispering in your ear trying to distract you.

[people chattering]

[Keke] I really am excited to see what goes on

inside of the Met at this point as well

because I mean, you know.

[Ilana] Well I am curious.

Okay I am here with Channing Tatum, Channing,

what, who created this look with you?

Versace.

Oh, Versace, also known as Versace.

Yes, Versace, other languages yes,

they pronounce it that way.

That's right, and what inspires you

about the theme of America tonight?

You know, we were never really sure

what to do with the theme but,

but John F. Kennedy Jr. was a reference that,

I was like, what's more American than that?

So we found a beautiful little reference photo

that was just simple and classic.

[Ilana] Nice, I'm loving, loving the cut.

Thank you.

[Ilana] Thanks for joining us.

Cheers good to see you. See ya, yeah you too.

Okay, we got Billie Eilish, she is turning it out,

look at that train.

That is gorgeous.

[Keke] I love this, this different type of vibe,

Billie has given us so many different versions of style,

from the beginning with all the streetwear

and just being that Gucci, Gucci girl.

And then now she's here in this beautiful gown

that I can't wait to see, you know,

hear from her who designed it.

But I just love how she gives us

these different expressions of feminism

and you know, just sexuality, beautiful.

[Ilana] Yeah, she's usually leaning into that masc vibe

but it's like a punked to see her femme.

[Keke] I know, it's so dope, it really is.

And you got to take, you know, explore,

[Ilana] that's my thing, it's like. Wow.

[Keke] I'm a strong believer of just like,

nobody is any one thing. Sometimes I want to be in a dress,

sometimes I want to be in a suit.

[Ilana] You know, play around with it. Yeah, that's right.

She is feeling it, go girl.

[Keke] I know it's very Marilyn-esque right?

Ooh, here's a fan comment, we're getting some trains.

Well, I mean, honey it's the Met Gala, you know, you know,

Rihanna set the tone some Met Galas back

with that yellow one.

That dress was insane.

[Ilana] Oh my God, was that insane?

The memes, they were really an homage.

You know, that was, nobody was making fun of that.

That was just honor.

[Keke] Literally, literally.

How's it going in over on your side?

[Ilana] It's going good.

People are, hey Chance.

[Chance] You want to chat? Hell yeah.

[Ilana] Cool.

Come on in.

Hi, I am so honored.

I am here with Chance the Rapper and Kirsten,

partner Kirsten, hey you guys, how are you doing tonight?

Hey, amazing, glad to be here.

So nice to meet you.

Okay so tonight's theme is America,

what are you wearing, who'd you design it with?

And okay, first question actually,

did you come up with it as a couple?

We got a lot of inspiration from Chicago

and from, well we're obviously wearing Ralph right now.

And so yeah, it was, it was mostly Ralph's idea,

also shout out to Law Roach, who's from Chicago.

He styled us.

We helped him come up with the sketches in collaboration.

[Ilana] And you're Ralph too Kirsten?

Yeah. Look at you guys,

you look gorgeous, what a set.

Thank you.

We gotta get this, this, this full length.

And also you guys are parents, right?

So you're getting like parent's night out, how's it feel?

Yeah, this is a huge relief to, you know,

just be out here with a bunch of adults,

now wearing, oh they're doing full body, yes.

[Ilana] Look at that.

[Chance] Yeah, oh wow, she look amazing,

everybody looks so good.

[Ilana] And down to the nails.

Yes. You got it back in here,

what's up with the back of the dress?

[Ilana] Oh, Kirsten were hiding the goods,

gorgeous, look at that.

It's all in the back.

Gorgeous.

Awesome, well, thank you so much for coming

and have a great night.

Appreciate it, yeah, this is awesome, thank you.

See ya, have a good night.

It's so nice to meet you. You too, such a pleasure.

I'll see you inside.

[upbeat music]

[Keke] So Ilana, you were hanging out

with my Chicago friends.

[Ilana] Yeah, the president of Chicago,

Chance the Rapper.

Uh oh, I am here with Saweetie and I couldn't be

[Ilana] more tapped in. Keke!

Okay girl!

I need this body, this body.

It's yours. Stop it, stop it girl.

We have to talk about it, who designed this?

How did you come up with this look?

Oh my God.

I am wearing Christian Cowan

and both of these flags that are draped from my body

is a Black American heritage flag and the Filipino flag

and that's what makes me an American girl.

Y'all heard here, Black and Filipino,

don't get it twisted, honey.

Now, how has fashion played a part

in storytelling for your music?

Because I feel like you are, you are that fashion girl.

So how do you connect the two?

Honestly girl, it's just my mood,

whatever mood I'm in that's how I'm dressing.

So honestly I could cry

but it's such an honor to be here tonight,

especially in front of you, you look amazing.

Girl but people don't know,

we go way back, we go way back.

We was up in them streets together, so.

That's why we both like, hey, we're at the Met Gala,

what's good? Yes Miss. Mama.

You look amazing.

Thank you so much, as do you.

Expensive popsicle, I just wanna, yes.

[laughing]

So who inspires your fashion? Did you have a fashion icon?

I mean there's the Rhiannas,

there's the Anna Wintours,

I mean, there's just so many fashion girls out there

so I'm really excited to see my girls tonight

because we'd be serving.

[Keke] Oh my gosh, I gotta tell you girl.

[Saweetie] Are you coming inside?

I'm coming inside girl.

So we going to have fun, you got a friend up in there,

this is my first Met Gala too.

This is my first Met Gala.

Girl, what are you looking most forward to?

The food. [laughing]

They don't understand how we gotta be,

you know it's like, we hungry,

after all is said and done, we eating.

Exactly, so I'm gonna see you in there.

You're gonna see me in there, enjoy,

look fabulous, sweetie.

Who did, who is your designer?

So Sergio Hudson put this together love,

so I'm giving you that Diana inspired.

I love me some, shout out to Sergio, he's my bo.

Yes, I love you Saweetie,

I'm so proud of you girl.

Thank you. Yes.

It's like how do I touch you without messing anything up.

Girl, I'm gonna see you inside.

You look, you have the same fabric.

[Keke] Okay.

[Saweetie] I know that's right.

[Keke] Oh, love my girls, Saweetie, uh she's such a doll.

How you going?

How's it going over there with you Ilana?

It's good, people are starting to fill in,

I'm seeing some, that person who tweeted was right,

we're starting to see some trains,

the trains are chugging here at the Met Gala.

Oh my gosh Saweetie's look, wow.

Drop dead.

[Keke] I know. Drop dead gorgeous.

[Keke] Troye, Troye,

Troye Sivan how you, how you doing honey?

You look so fabulous.

Thank you so much, the first thing I thought was,

I don't know who this man is.

It's literally, but hey, how are you?

I am living for this look,

please tell me how you came up with the darling.

You know, when I think of America, I think of,

especially in New York, I think of chic,

I think a black and white, I think of Robert Mapplethorpe,

and so, you know, I think of leather,

I feel like leather is so American

and I just wanted to, fucking you know, hot.

And it's minimal to, but it's still very striking.

the cutouts on the side.

I'm loving, who designed it?

This is Altu.

So fabulous, how you feeling tonight.

Is this your first, second, third Met Gala?

This is my second Met gala, I'm feeling good,

I feel less nervous than last time which is good.

Yes, what are you most excited about tonight?

I mean, I just saw Billie Eilish looking like,

an absolute vision and we're at the same table

so I'm excited to hang out.

Oh, I love it.

Well, please enjoy your time, you look fabulous Troye.

You look absolutely beautiful.

Thank you, darling, enjoy your night.

I know you already talked to Ilana Yara

but I just got to hug you because you're my booboo,

girl so the look is inspired by Josephine Baker?

Yes. Honey, you look fabulous.

Oh my god, word got up here quickly.

[laughing]

We be talking, we're in each other's ears.

You look fabulous. Thank you.

How's everything going?

This is your first, second, third?

Third, this is my third Met with Dior

and I'm having a good time.

So then you got to give me some tips.

What do I need to expect when I get in there?

Girl, 'cause this is my first Met.

I mean, I think what's funny is

we started with this like crazy, huge carpet,

one of the biggest of the years

and then when you go inside

and it's literally like a family dinner.

And so I think it's just more so like you,

what to expect is to take a deep breath

and everything that it's amped up to be

becomes so much more intimate,

as soon as you set through those doors.

I definitely wasn't expecting that.

We got one fan question coming in for you.

Yara was simply divine.

It's not really a question but it's a statement.

It's a statement that's true.

Well, go ahead and enter our family dinner,

it's always so good to see you, love you babe.

[Yara] I'll see you inside.

Yes.

Naomi Osaka!

Oh my gosh, you look so, it's so good to meet you, Keke.

Now I mean, Naomi, you are all,

I always admire how much you put your work balance

and your life balance in order, you always gotta check.

So how can we get a chance

to get you out for the Met Gala tonight?

To be honest, I just really wanted to come here

at least once and experience everything.

I love it. I love it.

And I love this look, I think, I mean, it's,

everybody's gonna love this story

because I know your sister worked with

Nicolas Ghesquiere from Louis Vuitton to create this look,

so your younger sister wants to be a fashion designer?

Actually she's my older sister and yeah,

we both really love fashion and we love designing.

So that was like sort of the work balance

that kind of came about.

Oh my gosh, I love that.

So you made it a family thing and a work thing.

And you also work closely with a makeup artist,

Autumn Moultrie, who I've known since I was a kid,

did she do your makeup tonight?

No, she didn't, she's in L.A. I think.

[Keke] Aw. Yeah.

Well shout outs to her, you look absolutely gorgeous.

What would you say this outfit, you know,

how does it connect to the theme of In America?

Yeah, so for me, Americana kind of means

a mix of all cultures and this dress

and this look sort of represents my two backgrounds,

Haitian and Japanese.

So I was really glad I was able to incorporate it.

Oh, I love it, now you are co-chairing this event,

we can't leave that part out

and you are basically now BFFs with Anna Wintour?

[Naomi laughing]

I'm not sure if you want to say that, but sure.

[Keke laughing]

I love how you were like, let's take it.

Now are you here alone tonight?

[Naomi] No, I'm with my boyfriend.

[Keke] Let's get into it love, let's get into it.

Well I gotta make sure I talk with him too

because you guys are just darling together.

[Naomi] Thank you.

[Keke] I hope you have a wonderful night

and I'm so glad I got to meet you, keep doing your thing.

[Naomi] Thank you, it's nice to meet you too.

[Keke] Yes, oh, so fabulous.

Uh oh Lil Nas X is in the building, honey.

Oh my, I want an, I actually got to ask him

his fitness regimen because at this point,

his body is like, I mean, how does he do it?

[Ilana] I mean, he's a chap, look at him serving, wow.

[Keke] Oh my gosh, I live for him living.

[Ilana] Yeah me too man.

[Keke] Oh my gosh.

[Ilana] He is drama.

[Keke] It is in the best way honey.

[Ilana] Oh my gosh. What else is going down on your side?

What are they giving us?

[Ilana] We got,

we got Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian walking through.

We got the line lining up, it's heating up.

[Keke] It definitely is heating up on this side,

we're getting backed up.

Billie is still making her way up the stairs honey.

They're having to drag that train up and down,

up and down the roundabout.
